Three weeks ago (Nov 7), The Dutch Health Ministry announced plans to extend its experimental medicinal pot program for five years, despite some setbacks.

The four year old program standardized marijuana grown by a government-licensed grower under controlled conditions and sold by prescription in pharmacies. All well and good for sufferers of chronic pain relieved by pot-smoking.

But there was just one problem. Not many patients were buying the stuff, even if they did have a Doctor's prescription. Why? Simple. It was too expensive. You could buy your therapeutic pot in a coffee shop - all types of marijuana - all strains - for a third of the price - where it's technically illegal but tolerated if sold in small amounts. What exactly is a "small amount". Less than half a ton? Who knows.

The idea behind this whacky scheme was to eventually wipe out the illegal growers. But looks like the Dutch Government haven't thought it through.

The Dutch Health Minister said -

"This development track will take years, but it can yield scientific evidence and give insight into the balance between safety and effectiveness of medical cannabis...By making medical marijuana available as a raw material for five years, I want to give this track a serious chance."

Health Minister Klink (and with a name like that he should be Minister of Prisons) said the government grow farms would have a surplus this year and said he hoped a drug under development would eventually replace marijuana and the need for official growers. What's he smoking? And are the farms guarded by armed security? Inquiring minds want to know. And what strains of pot are they growing? Holland's HopeHolland's Hope is an ideal outdoor plant, Holland's Hope was developed from Afghan and Skunk. It is a very strong hardy plant with a high yield and is a real commercial growers plant with a limited season. Ideal for cool climates. Holland's Hope has a sweet flavour and is of moderate strength.

IceIce seeds are the winner of the 1998 Cannabis Cup. It is a new classic and its high THC brings together excellent genetics. Its flowers are intensely covered with white crystals. Ice seeds are excellent for hydroponic growing. The smoke is sweet and the stone very heavy. A special cross of Afghan, Northern Lights, Skunk and Shiva. An excellent commercial strain.

Northern LightsNorthern Lights is one of the world's most famous marijuana strains. Very popular for indoor growing and produces large crystalline buds. Has a high flower to leaf ratio.

Purple PowerVery purple buds, with a unique taste and smell, Purple Power was developed to grow well in northern climates. It is a very heady plant and can be cultivated in colder or wetter climates. Purple Power was developed from early Dutch Skunk and Thai Haze varieties. The buzz is uplifting and plants get more purple in cooler climates.

PPPStrong PPP (Pure Power Plant) is a strong mostly Sativa strain developed from strong South African strains of the 90's. Produces a pleasant pine after taste. Powerful up social buzz and very crystaline. Its excellent growth potential makes is popular with commercial growers due to yields and high priced buds.
