Hippie Baby Names

Hippie & baby names
Hippie baby names Woaw man...peace and love...pass the joint...but not in front of the baby. There's been a resurgence in Hippie-Sounding Baby Names recently. Yeah really. Back in the Sixties and Seventies it was hip to call your baby River or Moondog or Crystal. Or even River, Sativa or Starshine. But then it became uncool. Let's face it - who wants to be stuck with a name like Chakra or Leaf? I bet a lot of those flower children changed their names as soon as they could. I know one of my nieces did. Her Hippie dropkick mother (who was part of a cult where the Guru had Nine wives and sixty five children) stuck her with the name Hayneenay - not sure of the spelling but that's how it was pronounced hay-nee-nay. Poor bloody kid was tall, slim and athletic - she liked to run - so of course the other kids dubbed her Horse and of course she hated it. When she came to live with me at sixteen she decided she wanted to start her new school off with a new name. So we sat down with a fashion magazine to look for one. We came to a full-page ad. for Chloé perfume. So that's what she picked. That kid drew the short straw but there's lots of other Hippie Names that aren't quite so radical. Have a look. Tell me what you decide.

Thanks for the list. Many of the names I'm already considering for my baby were on there. Yes, I am unapologetically hippy (to whom should I apologize- you?) My child will indeed be christened with a hippy-dippy name, and will receive a middle name that will appease boring people so that either may be used in the future. And, by the way, I happen to know a "Leaf" who is 30 and quite happy with his given name. I also know adults name "Blue", "Micah", "Deva", "Maya", "Orion", and "Lark", to name only a very few, who are quite happy and really don't care what your personal opinion might be.

@ Angela, Jesus what a nasty piece of work you are. Humourless too, I might add. I'm a child of the Sixties - yes an old hippy. So go fuck yourself you complete and utter twat.

I like your baby names. I was having a hard trying to find one. I can gladly thank you because my first born will be proudly named Ember Rain(Boy). You've saved me a lot of stress.

Thanks again :)

Wow, what a defensive couple of self-proclaimed hippies first posting up there. Sheez guys, lighten the heck up. Thanks for the list. I enjoyed looking at this. I'm sorry you had some sour pusses sour up your sweet site!

My daughter is called Eden. Her middle name is Rose. I think it's hippy enough but without being OTT, and we get lots of compliments on it.

I will be trying for another baby in 2009 and I am already really enjoying playing the baby name game again. I like Carmel or Paisley for a girl and Cyrus or Jared for a boy.

Just wanted to say loved some of the names on your list! I am almost 40 and have spent a lot of my life saying to people, yes it is a popular boys name and i am obviously not a boy! The strangest one was a friend who said upon meeting for the first time, My brothers dog is called Shannon! Oh well can't please everyone! By the way my daughter's name is Ashlea Paige little bit hippy-dippy but I love it!!

My daughters name is Noa which is actually a girls name in Israel and I've heard it in France too. I've never seen it on any of the lists though. Her middle name is Iloucha, from her great grandfather's name who was from Romania. I found it quite a feminine name. Never seen either name but maybe they're just weird names though I love them. X

No one should ever do this to their child. My parents gave me a weird hippie name, which is so unique and still so embarrassing to me I will not say what it is here. I had an incredibly difficult childhood for many reasons, but my name was at least in the top 3. I hated meeting new people because they would inevitably react with shock and disbelief at my name, and this ripped giant holes in my self-esteem which I have never recovered from. I changed it as soon as I was old enough to realize I could, and it's still such a painful subject I do not tell anyone what my name used to be. Please do not do this to your child, if you do you are a selfish person that is unfit to have children.

just in response to 'NoHippieNames' i have a 'hippie' name aswell im 18 and my name is Michael-Rainbow and i am a girl. so yes i am well aware of the 'look' you get of shock especially as i am not a child of the sixties or seventies i was born in 1991 for goodness sake. personally i embrace my name i think it's a good thing. for girls of my day 'ashleigh' and 'courtney' were definately the popular names and they all had the problem of which ashleigh? which courtney? i kept my full name Michael-Rainbow, everyone knew who i was. im expecting my first child and i am looking at 'hippie' names so my child can stand out so to you 'NoHippieNames' i say just because you had a bad experience with your name not everyone else did, and i dont think it is a fair statement to make that parents who choose hippie names are selfish people who are unfit to have children. that is a horrible thing to say and i wish you luck in the future that you find the light and step away from the shadows of your past and find some happiness. the world looks better when your happy. =]

My son's name is Kai and I love it. He seems to like it too, but he's only a toddler. :-D

It means lots of different things in different cultures. It means earth, love and ocean; however I named him this because he is part Native American, and it's Navajo for willow tree. I like the symbolism of a willow tree because it's graceful and strong. It bends, but never breaks in a storm. I had a rough pregnancy and he survived against all odds, so it fit.

To me, the symbolism of a name is the most important, hippy or not. I prefer hippy names though.

His middle name is Tenzin, which is the current Dalai Lama. I like this because it connotates peace and love. He has a beautiful namesake to live up to.

To NoHippyNames and others who hated their hippy names, I can't relate because I have always loved my name. I'm not judging you, but I think that self-confidence and happy childhoods are not determined by a name. I think that people who are "fit to be parents" instill love and confidence in their children through their affection, patience, love, compassion and kindness, not through their name choice. I chose a unique, special name because I am honored to raise such a unique, special spirit. I love my son's name and I love my son. That's all that matters.

If I have girl, I want to name her Indica Deanne. Deanne was my mom's name and I want to honor her because she was the most unique, beautiful, courageous, kind, talented woman I have ever met. I want to keep her memory alive. Deanne is a name that has been in my family for mulitple generations. I think Indica is beautiful because I love plants and nature.
