Sounds as silly as crap I've read about Australia not needing American's help during WW 2 and how the Yanks seemed to be responsible for f-ing up missions in the same war. I read that poor military intelligence was responsible for the failed rescue at Sandakan; Australian intelligence.

SUYA comments on Sandakan P.O.W. Too, bad it got involved in World War 1. That is when it all went down the tube. US involvement helped shorten that war so that a lot of people survived that maybe would have been better off dead and rotting on the battlefield. Adolf got so stirred up about it, and we all know what that led to...so America caused World War 2. Then they had to firebomb the poor Germans, who were only trying to save face and acquire some new farmland and factories. And those poor Japanese, who only wanted to expand their territory for resources. Americans like to stick their noses in other peoples' affairs. The world would certainly be a better place if America never existed...there wouldn't be any Jews to bother us in Europe, or an Isreal for that matter and we could have had a more peaceful mid-east. There probably wouldn't be too many Chinese people left after the Japanese got through with them, That would have help the world population problems.Communist China would never have been an issue, which means there never would have been a Korean War or probably a Vietnam War either. Hitler would have taken good care of Europe; really cleaned the place up. The United States itself would have been better off, too. No US soldiers killed in useless world wars. Yes,the world would have been such a nicer place!

Malcolm Lambe comments on Sandakan P.O.W. I hooked up with a friend in Adelaide to write a film about the experience of my grandfather in the Philippines Prison Camps. My grandfather, after whom I was named, did not make it back d Dec 15, 1944). But the atrocities of the Bataan Death March and the hellships (Oryoku Maru...) are equally abysmal. Good for you on publishing this story. The last of the survivors are disappearing rapidly. These experiences cannot disappear with them.

WCS comments on Sandakan P.O.W. Counter called "Mapstats". It works off Google Earth. Just hit the button under the Geoloc map. It doesn't flash like Geoloc and aint as purty but it works fine. Gives the city, IP and browser the visitor is using. And lets out a large SCREAM when there's a real cracker on line followed by "INCOMING!" so you have time to duck. I'm convinced there's a "Cracker Line" just like the Seismic one. Takes in all the Southern States and the Mid-West of Looneyland, goes through Seth Effrica, part of South America and even our very own Tasmania. I note that one of Seppo-Boy's co-conspirators is from Launceston. Say no more. "I love the smell of leather in the morning" - don't you? Is it a 12-gore skirt? Or 24? Girls? Not you Jay...the other girls.

I hope Michael reports in from M/V Orion. We'll be able to see the Red Marker planted in Antarctica. Or will we? Maybe the signal comes from the American server. Pity.

BTW who's in Greta New South Wales and Osborne NSW? Both running PCs. Where is Osborne, anyway. Have a look at the Satellite map while you're there. Maybe this is better than Geoloc, hmm? Gives a lot of info. Come on Jaybird...stick your head up. There he is now! Got ya! "Disneyland, U.S.A."

lambe, paris comments on Sandakan P.O.W. We all know what's "right". And this invasion of Iraq isn't "right". No matter what these apologists say. They were just looking for a fight to dress their 9/11 wounds with. Iraq was the perfect target for them. And look at the God-awful mess they've made of things. And of course that out-and-out bastard Howard has dragged us into it - albeit with a handful of soldiers, couple of ships and a few helicopters. Pathetic.

Lou comments on Sandakan P.O.W. Obviously what they went through completely skewed their view of what was important and what wasn't - eg young Malkie or young Lou or young Wendy dunno if their arses are on fire or not compared with Sandakan. Which is true, of course. And yet kids had their rights too, and the irony is this is what their old fellas fought for.

War never stops being a tragedy, for generations.
