Nikki Catsouras Car Crash Photos Controversy

I've had a large number of visitors in the last week coming here to look at the grisly Nikki Catsouras Porsche crash photos. Apparently sections of the media are beating that story up again. Sigh. Thing is...you guys are actively searching for the photos on Google and then coming here...and, excepting for a couple of people, abusing me. And it's ALWAYS the same stupid question - WHY did you post them? I posted them two years ago. And I'll say it again - I posted them to get people to think twice about reckless driving. And again - What gives me the right? It's called Freedom of Information. They are in the Public Domain. They are all over the net. I just happen to be at the top of Google for them.

So why the hell did you Search for them if you weren't prepared to be shocked and horrified? Did you think it was going to be a pretty site?

I've taken two of the most graphic ones down. Porsche Crash

Hey, I'm glad you posted the photos, and the way you did it. I'm a somewhat private, older guy, not into social networking, entertainment news, etc. Frankly, I'd never even heard of this girl and the crash until I read about the hullabaloo on AOL.com today. And what do you think it made me want to do? - "see what all the fuss was about". I understand the family's wishes. But I think this may be another case of actually alerting more people than if you just ignored it and let it quietly go away. Am I ghoul for wanting to see this? I don't know - I know I didn't enjoy seeing them. It also reminded me of how I couldn't handle being in law enforcement which is what I wanted to do. But curiosity is a basic human instinct - it's what makes us intelligent in the end. I HAD to see them. But what I wasn't interested in at all was the demeaning comments I've read are associated with the photos on some sights. This is about as bad as a wreck can be. Fortunately she died instantly. But at least you just put the photos there and left the commentary to the observer. I don't think you could post these with class, but your explanation and parental sensitivity makes it OK by me. There; my curiosity has been satisfied - I'm not happy I saw them but I'm not regretting it either. As I said, for me, I had to see them. One final point I'd like to make is that seemingly lost in all the plight of the parents is that this young, extremely irresponsible lady risked the lives of many innocent motorists, specifically the one she hit. The good news in all of this is she is the only one who died.

@ Ron,

I don't know what to say any more. Those photos REALLY disturbed me...really upset me. But I felt I had to let people see them. BTW there are a lot more out there on the net. Even more shocking - blood and brains. But I still think the lesson is - "Look...this is what can happen if you're driving irresponsibly." And as you say - it's a miracle she didn't kill someone else. Very sad, the whole business.

While I understand and agree with your entry, especially filling in some details the family didn't share (cocaine abuse),calling folks who have viewed these pictures as "ghouls" is about as two faced as you can get. Face it,you're the real ghoul here...no one forced you to post these pictures, you did it just like the news media is overkilling the swine flu...you did it for views and rankings, right?

Of course you did.

@ Michael, i'm guessing you're American. It's called "irony" - something you'll never understand.

Here you go. This is what people are emailing me with -

"I was just wondering why you haven't taken down the pictures of Nikki Catsouras. I mean like you said it was sad and awful and horrific and its just gonna be a bunch of sickos that come here to look. Yea and you are letting them they are getting off on this is nasty give the family some respect man take them down or lease that the pictures of her body. It makes me sick someone like you could post someone kid body on the net for everyone to see. Like you said about you haveing two kids and if you got in a fight and they took the car and they died, and if I was one of the asshole Officer I sent the pictures of your kid body to my home computer and then sent it to everyone as a joke. You wound not like it people makeing fake shit on the net all over I hope this never happen to anyone it should have never happen in the first place. You would want respect so give them people need to stop with that aka Porsche Girl ok she has a fucking name she is a human. That bull shit how those officers were not breaking the law that bull and people like you posting shit like this should be locked away its the reason why the world it like this people don't care about anyone. Please just take them down you have all kinds of people looking like underage kids and teens and more just think about if you were in there shoes you wound not like it so why you doing it !!!! You will get whats comeing karma hurts like a bitch it will hit you twice .I like your site you have alot of funny shit but you need to take this off just anit right just think if that was your kid and everyone could see it and someone sent you it picture you never saw of your kid. If you have a heart please take it down."

Here's another -

"I read about the horrific pictures of the Orange County girl Nikki, and what her family's going through. I typed in into google "how to help Lesli Catsouras" trying to find something i could do to help her because her story really burdened me. Your website was the first link that popped up. How could you post those pictures? I didn't even click on them I know I would never want such graphic images burned into my brain. Without even clicking on them I was exposed to their horror. Would you truly believe it would be profitable for someone to print those kind of pictures of your children if they were in that kind of accident? My brother attempted suicide while driving one night. His car crashed but a passerby called 911 and he was rushed to the hospital. She found him laying in the middle of the with a gunshot would to the head. I can only imagine the pain it would have caused all of us if she had snapped a few pics on her phone and shared them with the world. He lost his left eye, but survived. If you're morbid curiosity is that strong, you should just wait till one of your children or loved ones dies, then snap a few pictures of them to enjoy."

And another -

"I saw this story for the first time today on AOL. It's incredibly sad of course but I think you did a good thing by showing the pix. I think if a lot of kids (and even us older people) see these pix they might reconsider their driving habits. I'm sure when Princess Diana died and it showed those photos a lot of people drove more carefully, for a while at least. I go to work every day through a tunnel and those photo's of Diana's wreck always make me more vigilant whereas before I never gave it two thoughts.

I don't agree with the family suing CHP or anyone else. What they SHOULD be doing is spending their money on Interstate billboards with these pictures (although maybe not the one of her head but I'm not so sure about that either.). After all, they owned a Porsche? Apparently they have plenty of money to spend?

This wasn't a case of a young, innocent girl borrowing dad's car to go to the diner for a soda pop and getting creamed by some DUI. This girl, as lovely and beautiful as she was, was obviously f***ed up in the head and sometimes, as a parent, no matter how hard you try, there's nothing you can do about it..

They should use this as an example, like the Walsh family did after the death of Adam, and make something positive about it and stop suing and blaming CHP and everyone else because whatever happened to Nikki, the ultimate cause of the problem stemmed from the home. They bare no blame but sometimes you just don't see it. It's like that light fixture you've noticed flashing every now and then and think nothing of it then one day it shorts out and burns your house down.. that's life.."

And again -

"I think it is a crying shame that these photos are all over the net and you also should be horse whipped for showing them. If the parents of this girl gave their approval for them to be used to educate teenagers to the dangers of driving and drug use fine but the parents should be the only one to approve the use for that purpose. And as far as the one CHP officer only receiving a 25 day suspension that was to lenient he should have been fired and the firing put on You Tube for all the world to see.

Society today has gotten so cold, callous and completely gross is scary, there is nothing sacred anymore, like some compassion for the family and friends of this girl to pick up the pieces of their life and go on after this terrible tragedy!!!!!"

More -

"Howe can you put photos like that on here - her family and freinds can see it - this is just plain disguting and shows how heartless you are...."

One more -

"What gives you the RIGHT to put pictures up of someone's DAUGHTER that died tragically? What if this were YOUR kids when THEY grow up? You haven't been through anything with your children yet, as you are going through the EASY phases right now of their lives. Just because this girl made a terrible mistake in her short life, as many that age HAVE, you should not subject her poor parents and family of this! Why is everyone is this country so SICK nowadays?! Just because you crave attention! What will you tell YOUR kids when you get older about how insensitive you were of this family (disrespectful) and took it upon your own to subject them to this? You are part of the problem in society. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what becomes of someone after they were speeding and died in a tragic accident. I'm sure the accident scenes (without the body) ALONE would be enough to scare someone. What would you do if someone showed YOUR kids now? What if it was your kids? How would YOU feel later on in life if someone did this to you? What goes around comes around and you have MUCH to learn! I PITY your children. People like yourself shouldn't be ALLOWED to procreate!"
May 3, 2009 | Registered CommenterMalcolm Lambe
Well Malcolm, I'm going to thank you for putting these pictures up. Personally, I think these pictures should be on big billboards all over the country, with "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SPEED" on them in big letters. At least Nikki's stupid death might then help to save other peoples lives.

The great thing about the internet is that the information is there if you want to find it. It would take a truly stupid person to be outraged about looking at gory pictures they deliberately went out searching for. Sadly there are many truly stupid people and some of them will be emailing you. So this is my message of support.

As for people outraged about disrespecting the dead: you can't possibly show more disrespect to Nikki than she did to herself when she got coked to the gills and smooshed herself all over the highway.

Wow, did you read the rest of the story? The person that said this was not a young innocent girl that took her father's porsche for a joyride? Did you read about the young innocent 3 YEAR OLD that had a brain tumor?? Did you read about the young innocent girl that went through a bunch of radiation therapy that pretty much rendered her with brain disfunction? I have seen people like this. I have been a medic for many years. My husband is a police officer. Neither of us would post pictures like this. The outside of the vehicle, yes, the body, no way. Her family was spared this horrible sight and allowed to remember her as she was, until.....
now what do you think they see at night? When they close their eyes do you think they see her smiling face? No, they are made to visualize a terrible, beyond nightmarish vision that made up only moments of her life. I too have a cousin that tried to committ suicide by car. No matter how much we take her to the hospital, the hospital still puts her back out into the world against our wishes. Against our better judgement. But I would NEVER want to remember her this way.
I love the picture of your young son on this site. I am just wondering how you would feel if something similar happened to your son in the future and we posted his picture, the end picture on the computer for all to see? In the end, it was her choice. She did it, her sin, her downfall. Why make it the parents too?
Who cares if these people had a Porsche? I have a van. It is a nice van. It is also the one thing that we spent money on. I don't know them, the car could have been their one luxury for all I know or anyone else knows. It certainly is not a reason to torment them.
As for the family, I would stay away from these sites all together. Don't look. Go to inlovingmemory.com and build your own site with happy pictures and stories and visit it often. No one can add pictures without your approval. Dwell there, not on websites such as this.

And if she'd killed a whole bunch of kids in that accident what would you be saying then huh? And I don't buy this "young innocent girl that went through a bunch of radiation therapy that pretty much rendered her with brain disfunction?" story that the family put out A LOT LATER. This was the second time she'd Cocaine binged - according to them. First time she had to go to de-tox in the hospital. Then she goes and does it again...

I've allowed this comment from holier-than-thou "DJ" above about my boy (about the third person to try that on with me) to be posted but that's it. Any more assholes bring my family into it I'll just shut down your stupid comments.

You should get this in perspective. This accident happened October 31 - Halloween, 2006. Two and a half years ago. There is nothing new to report. It's just being beaten-up by the mainstream media such as AOL and Newsweek - http://www.newsweek.com/id/195073

Malcolm, I'll just throw in one more word of support before moving on, and I guess I'll get off track a bit. BTW, good point on the fact that this is 2 1/2 years old. Everyone but me and 25 other people on the planet had already seen these pictures. Anyway, I simply want to say "consider the source" when you read these postings. (Personally, I couldn't handle the personal attacks.) But if you'll notice, the critical folks have a pitiful command of the English language, i.e. they're not bright, or thoughtful. Secondly, the fact they can't engage in a debate without getting personal and combative speaks volumes. I would love to find a site where I could share thoughtful views with others, in agreement or not, as long as people can be civil. But alas, that appears to be rare. Too many people out there with a "my way, or up yours" attitude. Leave the pictures up. I always say, "if you can't make everyone happy, at least piss off the ones you can really good". Good luck to you and yours.

this is just sad.i guess your reasoning for posting those pictures,to teach people to drive safer, but you could have alittle respect for their family and take the pictures down.
what if you where in their shoes?
THINK for once.

I am a mother not a sicko. I just want you to know that. I also want you to know that I believe this web site could save lives. I have never been so horrified by anything in my life.

Here's the latest fan mail. Title "Just One Guy to Another".

"I was directed to your site via a search engine –

When I read your personal intro…ABOUT the Idiot behind this…I was surprised by one statement on your site…” I used to be very open with my life and family here in these pages but a few sickos ruined it for everybody. So now I'm not being as candid nor am I showing many pictures of my family.

Don’t the people and pictures you post on your site deserve the same from you?

I could understand your bond to certain stories because of their horrific nature; but that doesn’t empower you to use something so private for your own benefit (promotion of your site and personal views on your site).

I could understand if you were commercial news outlet – and your obligation to report. But it’s not that either – the legitimate news agencies have removed the story because it isn’t current.

You’re just a guy with a site – show some decency in the same context you’ve clearly been affected; and that drove you to become less candid on your own site.

You should remove the photos of Nikki. Nikki is not a part of your life, and certainly not someone that should be publically displayed for her mistake and misfortune.

The real story is – the lack of professionalism within Police forces (the Police should have only released information to the judiciary branch of the local government)…think about how Police misconduct has and will impact all of us…including our children."

Obviously his comment " the legitimate news agencies have removed the story because it isn’t current" is total crap. Google "Nikki catsouras" and see who else of the "mainstream media" have jumped on the bandwagon.

Mr. Malcolm Lambe,
I as a parent of three girl's can only hope this never happen's to me, You should have put yourself in Nicki's parent's position before posting these picture's, you could have posted the wrecked auto without posting the gruesome picture's of her body as you chose to do,,,,,,,I'm a firm believer in Karma, so prepare yourself for the future and remember how her parent's must have felt and feel as you suffer through your pain.......You say you have no monetary value in your mind when you posted these , So why did you post them ? for recognition ? for bragging right's ? or just some sick reason you can't come up with ? have a great day and think how her parent's must feel,,,,,,,,Mr. Mark A. Cox
