Winning the hearts and minds

House of correction
It's a good look, isn't it? Liberation, American style at Rugrabbinmynuts, House of Bondage, Iraq. Dickbreath below has just posted what he calls an "essay" on Abu Grahib where he tries to excuse this outrageous behaviour of the Americans by describing the even more appalling torture that went on there under Saddam - kind of like "See, we're not half as bad".

And you wonder why you're losing whatever goodwill you had left in the world, America? More pictures here of how the Americans treat detainees - Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play, where seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day

In contrast to a certain country which shall remain nameless (NOT being in the TOP 12), and at the risk of displaying that emotion (patriotism) which, in EXCESS, Aussies generally mistrust... it IS Australia Day, so on this one day of the year, here are some links to quality-oflife rankings which only prove that, in this one instance, John Howard was about right (when he said it's the "best country in the world").

THE ECONOMIST (a VERY conservative publication) QUALITY-OF-LIFE INDEX:

The TOP 12 countries for quality of life are, in order:
Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Luxembourg, Sweden, **AUSTRALIA**, Iceland, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Singapore, Finland

And here's another highly respected index, the UN Human Development Index, with Oz ranked even HIGHER (at no. 3) for quality-of-life:

Here we have the top 10 countries, in order: Norway, then Iceland, then **AUSTRALIA**, Luxembourg, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium

Of course, we could also look at longevity rankings, and guess which countries are in the top 10 here? Isn't it great to know Oz is ranked SECOND (with Sweden and Switzerland)!

For example:

Top 10 countries: Japan, then **AUSTRALIA** Sweden & Switzerland, then Canada, then France, then Spain, then Norway, then Israel, then Austria (and after that we have New Zealand, Germany, Britain, ...)

Interesting rankings. I'm always fascinated when those come out...

I think this Jay character would fit right in at Abu Grahib. I'm sure the prisoners all welcome him with open arms when he gives them sweets and advises he is a child of god.
I had a read through his posts yesterday and came to the conclusion that whilst there are ignorant warmongering self deluded fuckheads like him around we really don't have a chance.
Pissed me off !!!!

Yeah, well I still have hope Rob....

Call me naive, but I think more people think like we do, than Jay and his buddies.
January 26, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterWCS
Yeh maybe WCS however his total inability to face up to the realities of the situation concerned the hell out of me. I thought we were supposed to learn from our mistakes?

I like to put a slice of cold butter on my pizza.
As far as I'm aware no one else in the entire world does this...

Ahh, what a glorious day. Morning all.

I'm with you Rob. And what's with all the stuff about wives?
January 26, 2006 | Unregistered CommenterUncle B
It is the height of hypocrisy for Jay to talk about being a good Christian and the holy bible and then start talking about people's wives IMHO.

Howevere, being such the believer in karma that I am, I am confident that one day it will come back around and bit him in the ass.

Bite too. Obviously I need more coffee.

Didn't you guys get a day off today? Nice to see you. I'm friggin' homesick. I wanna swan around the harbour with you crew on my mate's boat. Check it out - click on the "Flagship Charters" button on the Nav Column. The boat is M/V Commissioner II. You think you'd like to do drinkie-poos on that?
I've put more stuff on the Sandakan story if you're interested.

Thanks heaps for the Sandakan piece Lambe, I showed it to my mother yesterday and she was impressed, we are both going to Ranua later this year to see my grandfathers grave for the first time, feeling a bit hinky aout it already.
BTW she had a bit of a surf around and proclaimed fingers and myself as utter disgraces, just shook her head in regards to Pervy.

Day off yesterday. Although working on a friday between a public holoiday and the weekend is kinda screwed ... I'm only here because even with today I'm only working 14 days this month, or 108 hours and thats' all I get paid for.
