In contrast to a certain country which shall remain nameless (NOT being in the TOP 12), and at the risk of displaying that emotion (patriotism) which, in EXCESS, Aussies generally mistrust... it IS Australia Day, so on this one day of the year, here are some links to quality-oflife rankings which only prove that, in this one instance, John Howard was about right (when he said it's the "best country in the world").

THE ECONOMIST (a VERY conservative publication) QUALITY-OF-LIFE INDEX:

The TOP 12 countries for quality of life are, in order:
Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Luxembourg, Sweden, **AUSTRALIA**, Iceland, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Singapore, Finland

And here's another highly respected index, the UN Human Development Index, with Oz ranked even HIGHER (at no. 3) for quality-of-life:

Here we have the top 10 countries, in order: Norway, then Iceland, then **AUSTRALIA**, Luxembourg, Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium

Of course, we could also look at longevity rankings, and guess which countries are in the top 10 here? Isn't it great to know Oz is ranked SECOND (with Sweden and Switzerland)!

Thanks heaps for the Sandakan piece Lambe, I showed it to my mother yesterday and she was impressed, we are both going to Ranua later this year to see my grandfathers grave for the first time, feeling a bit hinky aout it already.
BTW she had a bit of a surf around and proclaimed fingers and myself as utter disgraces, just shook her head in regards to Pervy.

Day off yesterday. Although working on a friday between a public holoiday and the weekend is kinda screwed ... I'm only here because even with today I'm only working 14 days this month, or 108 hours and thats' all I get paid for.
