Sex Sells

231239-244850-thumbnail.jpgThere's a brouhaha brewing over the advertising and personal business style of the guy behind American Apparel, Dov Charney. He's been accused of sexploitation both in his marketing and the way he conducts business. Have a look at the Eye Candy first, here - americanapparel.net Check out the "gallery".

Charney opened his first American Apparel store in downtown L.A. just over two years ago. And he's braining it. Today there are more than 100 of the stores flogging simple, bright, no-bullshit clothes. Clothes that appeal to the hip and happy. The stores are scattered across the globe - Seoul, Tokyo, Berlin, Mexico City, New York and Londonium.

Charney-babe deals in basics. His biggest seller is a fine-jersey T-Shirt available in funky colours like cranberry and asphalt. He started flogging T's while still in high-school.

People are narky because they say Charney swears a lot, roots his staff and overpays his workers. He has free phones in the workplace, massage areas, you can have a drink if you're working back, and there's plenty of inter-office fucking.

(Sounds exackery like a certain radio station I used to work at. But we were doing lines in the boardroom as well.)

But wait...there's more! American Apparel sweatshops have beaucoup light, a subsidised canteen, interest-free loans, free pushies, cash-machine cards that avoid the charges incurred in cashing a pay-cheque. And inter-office nooky. Enlightened or what? Where would you rather work? Uncle Pervy's already got his job application in. He's looking forward to doing the business.

He does make a damn fine t-shirt though.

And those who are getting narky are probably the same ones who hated the Abercrombie and Fitch orgy photos. Some people have no tolerance for sexuality in their ads.
